43 Academic Program Advisory Board Policy

Murray State College Academic Program Advisory Boards

The Mission of an advisory board includes the following:

1. Offering insights and recommendations on the program’s strategic direction, helping to shape its long-term vision and goals.

2. Bringing specialized knowledge and industry expertise to the program, aiding in decision-making and problem-solving.

3. Ensuring that the program adheres to best practices in governance, accountability, and transparency.

4. Identifying potential risks and advising on strategies to mitigate them, helping the program navigate challenges effectively.

5. Helping to monitor and evaluate the program’s performance against its objectives.

6. Promoting the program’s mission and values to external stakeholders, seeking opportunities for partnerships and collaborations.

Meeting protocol for MSC Advisory Boards

  1. Meet 1 – 4 times annually
  2. Membership: 7 – 9 stakeholders, including:
    • Current Student
    • Alumni
    • Program Chair
    • Three Industry Professionals (at least)
    • Faculty Member
  3.  Meeting agenda (Keep meetings to 1 hour)
  4. Chair provides update on current status of program
  5. Industry Professionals report on the state of the industry
  6. Discuss the alignment of Program and Industry
  7. Create action items to be reported on at the next meeting
  8. All advisory board minutes must be stored on Commons

Suggested Requirements for MSC Advisory Board Members

Members should be willing to commit the necessary time to fulfill their responsibilities, which include attending meetings, participating in discussions, providing constructive feedback and insights, and completing the annual survey.

Members should adhere to the highest ethical standards and act in the best interests of the program, avoiding conflicts of interest and maintaining confidentiality regarding sensitive information shared during board meetings and discussions.

Members should provide high-level strategic thinking, providing guidance and advice as needed while not getting involved in the day-to-day operations of the program.

Members are expected to serve a term of 2 years, which can be renewed upon agreement of the program chair and advisory board members.
