10 Classroom and Instructor Responsibilities
Each faculty member’s primary responsibility is to facilitate student learning in a given subject area. Fulfilling this responsibility requires that the faculty member accomplish the following summarized, specific responsibilities during the scheduled course:
- One week prior to the start of classes, the current syllabi will be made available in Blackboard to ensure early dissemination of all written policies and procedures regarding the classroom, attendance, and grading.
- Maintain accurate and timely student records on the Blackboard grade book. Grades will be entered no later than 7 days after the due date.
- Monitor student attendance and record attendance. Ellucian Colleague provides attendance logs in the portal located at aggiesonline.mscok.edu/
- Provide instructor contact information that includes more than one line of communication for the students to contact faculty members.
- Respond to student inquiries within 48 hours.
- Use all textbooks and supplemental materials as approved by the Chair.
- The course syllabus must include all written policies and procedures regarding classroom, attendance, and grading. The syllabus for every class must be posted on Blackboard and saved in the repository.
- Use the most current blackboard shell for the course/program. Update the course-specific information. This would include “meet the instructor”, course navigation, textbook information, weekly folders, assignments, and current due dates.
- Submit No-Show rosters by the deadline given by the Registrar for every course. An early assessment or discussion board must be required in online classes to identify student attendance.
- Be available via email or phone to students or administrators during the week that final grades are submitted, for any grade-related errors or questions.
- Turning in grades late is unacceptable and may result in disciplinary action.
- Comply with the College’s educational philosophy and instructional methods.
- Comply with all college policies and procedures.
- The last date of attendance must be provided on add/drop forms for administrative withdrawals as well as for any student who receives a failing grade.
- Keep the Chair informed of any problems concerning the success of the class.
- All classes must meet up to and including the final day of the course. The instructor should begin and end the class at the scheduled time. Late starts and/or early dismissal of classes are not acceptable. Finals will be administered according to the final exam schedule issued by the VPAA office.
- Administer and/or complete all administrative forms required by the college. This includes but is not limited to; time off requests, travel forms, and vacation requests, prior to the anticipated event.
- Encourage students to complete course evaluations and refrain from using unauthorized evaluations.
- Check with the Library to determine the availability of all learning materials, which are referenced in the syllabus. Notify the Library and Vice President of Academic Affairs of any missing materials.
- Instructor Absences – As soon as a faculty member is aware that an emergency or illness will require an absence, the Chair is to be notified. The faculty member must arrange for coverage of missed class meetings and notify the Chair about those arrangements.
- Enforce College policies prohibiting the use or consumption of alcohol, illegal drugs, and tobacco.
- Ensure that classrooms are left clean and orderly for the people who use the room afterward.
- Ensure that only enrolled students and their interpreters are permitted in the classroom. This means children and guests are not allowed to attend.
- Inform the Chair of other employment within or outside Murray State College and complete the Secondary Employment Request Form found in MSC forms.
