Story Elements

□ Opening sentences state focus of writing.

□ Develops a central idea that describes people, places, objects, or events.

□ Grabs the attention of the reader.

□ Uses details and descriptive language.

□ Creates a clear picture of what is being described.

□ Incorporates at least three of the five senses in descriptions.

□ Varies word choice.

□ Uses strong nouns and vivid verbs.

□ Keeps the reader’s attention throughout the writing.

□ Ending sentences conclude the description.

 

Writing Mechanics

□ Uses a variety of sentence structures and lengths.

□ Correct spelling.

□ Begins to use conventional spelling.

□ Writes in complete sentences.

□ Uses correct punctuation.

□ Uses subject/verb agreement.

□ Capitalizes the first word in each sentence.

□ Uses correct spacing between letters, words, and sentences.
