Introduction

This text supports students studying biology at the cellular and molecular level. As an introductory course, there is broad coverage of topics. Supplemental information regarding metacognition and a presentation project using public-health data are included as ancillary material.

This introductory cell and molecular biology text is supported with an external lab component. The course includes an in-depth study of fundamental biological concepts, including metabolism, homeostasis, heredity, evolution, and ecology at the sub-cellular, cellular and organismal levels. It provides the foundation for other advanced courses in the biological sciences.

Course Outcomes

1.     Test predictions from scientific hypotheses using basic biological laboratory techniques.

2.     Distinguish living organisms based on the characteristics of life.

3.     Describe the chemical components of life.

4.     Relate cell structure to function.

5.     Associate metabolic processes as they relate to cell function.

6.     Apply the basic principles of molecular and Mendelian genetics.

7.     Relate mechanisms of genetic inheritance to evolution.
