7 Collaboration
Candace Schell
For students (specifically students with disabilities) who struggle to be more successful, the adults in their lives (parents, teachers, paraprofessionals, and teacher’s aides) have to work together. Working together involves collaboration. Simply defined, collaboration takes place when members of an inclusive learning community work together as equals to assist students to succeed in the classroom. This may be in the form of lesson planning with the child in mind or co-teaching a group or class. This chapter focuses on the ways that members of a learning community can approach the collaborative process.
