Professional Development: Portfolio and Engagement

Learning Objectives

By the end of the chapter, learners will be able to:

  • Demonstrate coursework that meets SES program outcomes
  • Attend campus or community engagement activities

Professional development requirements in the department are documented and submitted in this course.

Requirement 1: Portfolio

Students will document how they feel they are meeting each of the departmental outcomes by providing evidence of coursework. Students will provide two sources of evidence of their choosing to show competence in EACH of the Sports & Exercise Science (SES) program outcomes. Examples of evidence can include the following:

  • Exams
  • Quizzes
  • Case Studies
  • Article Critiques/Reviews
  • Course Assignments
  • Other activities approved by the department

SES Outcomes

  • Students will identify scientific principles to support evidence-based practices.
  • Students will demonstrate the use of appropriate assessments for a range of health conditions.
  • Students will design appropriate wellness programs for a range of health conditions.
  • Students will communicate professional information effectively.
  • Students will recognize legal and ethical standards for professional practice.

Requirement 2: Professional Development Engagement

SES recognizes the importance of engagement in on campus and community events.  This provides students with networking opportunities as well as means to improve soft skills such as communication across the lifespan.  Students are required to participate in five professional development activities during the course of their time within the SES program. These activities will be documented through the submission of the Professional Development Report Form and evidence of attendance/participation.

Specific Rules and Guidelines:

  • PD activities must come from at least 2 of the different category examples listed below.
    • o Student cannot do two of the same things!
  • If it is an activity that participation is already required, the activity will not count towards PD.
  • For the PD activity to count and be considered completed the student must have the following:
    • o Evidence of Attendance (See below)
    • o Completed Professional Development Report Form

 Examples of professional development may include:

  • Attendance at Cameron sponsored student activities
  • Attendance at Cameron athletic events
  • Participation in community-based projects/activities relevant to the discipline
  • Participation and Attendance to professional conferences
  • Participation in departmental research projects
  • Submission of research project for Oklahoma Research Day
  • Submission of research project for OAHPERD Conference
  • Teaching and Coaching certificate
  • Other activities approved by the department

Examples of evidence of attendance include:

  • Event sponsor signature
  • Event program
  • Photo of participation at event (Must actually show participation in activity)
  • Email of acceptance to event
  • Final presentation materials (poster, abstract, etc.)
  • Other evidence approved by the department

Transfer Students

Transfer students will be required to submit documentation that is representative of their time at Cameron University.

Modifications of the above listed requirements may include the following:

  • Reduction of the number of examples of evidence for Requirement #1
  • Reduction in the number of Professional Development Activities for Requirement #2
  • Other modification approved by the department
