How to Use this Book – To the Instructor from the Author
As an instructional designer, my goal for this book is to help instructors develop quality academic experiences for students. To accomplish this, an instructor may find it more helpful to copy the content from the chapters into their LMS content and personalize them. As the author, I would ask that some attribution be noted; however, I do give permission for copy and personalization to better meet the needs of the students.
The AI assignments are provided in separate chapters from the instruction to reduce confusion in case an instructor wants to only use one or the other, but there may still be confusion when there are additional options, such as discussion prompts. I would recommend that chapter questions be formatted as an assignment or quiz, discussion instructions be copied into the prompt itself and customized, and AI assignments be more specifically suited to the exact class that will use them.
If you would prefer to use the exact text of the pressbook, it might be helpful to insert the chapter as an iframe so that it appears directly in the LMS. The html code for Canvas to accomplish this is as follows. The highlighted URL should be replaced with the exact URL you would like to display in the iframe.
<p><iframe style=”border: 1px solid black;” src=”https://open.ocolearnok.org/composition2nextlevel/chapter/%e2%9c%a8ai-courtroom-role-play-ai-enhanced-activity/” width=”100%” height=”400px”></iframe></p>
This book may also be used for its principles around AI assignments in courses other than Composition. I invite any instructor to explore the approaches used in the AI assignments for the sake of inspiration when looking for ideas to use in your own courses. The guiding principle was to develop experiences where the AI would provide immediate feedback and a tutor-like experience but would not do any core work for them. AI is for collaboration, not for delegation.
