28 ✨AI Enhanced Activity: Thesis-Driven Conclusions

For this assignment, review the three example thesis statements and accompanying outlines. Recognize the differences in the outlines based on the thesis statements, which are all based on the same topic. Your assignment will be to write a conclusion paragraph for each of these samples. You will need to consider how the conclusion will be different for each based on the thesis statement.

Topic: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the Workforce

Thesis 1: While AI has the potential to automate certain tasks, its primary impact on the workforce will be the creation of new, specialized roles requiring human collaboration and oversight. Thesis 2: The widespread adoption of AI in the workforce will inevitably lead to significant job displacement and exacerbate existing economic inequalities. Thesis 3: To fully realize the benefits of AI in the workforce, proactive measures must be taken to retrain and upskill workers for the evolving demands of AI-integrated industries.

Activity Instructions for Students:

Activity: Thesis-Driven Conclusions: Crafting Endings for Varying Arguments

  1. Analyze the sample thesis statements and outlines: Carefully read and analyze the three thesis statements and corresponding outlines provided above. Pay close attention to:

    • The specific thesis statement of each outline.
    • How the subtopics in each outline support the respective thesis.
    • The overall argument being made in each outline.
  2. Craft Your Conclusions: Write three distinct conclusions, one for each outline. Each conclusion should:

    • Effectively synthesize the arguments presented in the body paragraphs of that specific outline.
    • Clearly connect back to the specific thesis statement of that outline.
    • Reflect the unique argument being made in that outline.
  3. AI Critique: After writing your three conclusions, use an AI writing tool (e.g., ChatGPT, Bard, etc.) to get feedback. For each conclusion, provide the AI with the thesis statement, the relevant outline, and your conclusion. Ask the AI for feedback on how well your conclusion synthesizes the argument and connects back to the thesis.

    Example Prompt:

“I’ve written a conclusion for an essay with the following thesis: [paste thesis]. Here is the outline of the essay: [paste outline]. Here is my conclusion: [paste conclusion]. Please provide feedback on how well my conclusion synthesizes the argument presented in the outline and connects back to the thesis. Specifically, address how effectively I’ve connected the subtopics and whether the conclusion reflects the unique argument of the essay.”

  4. Analyze AI Feedback and Revise: Carefully review the AI’s feedback. Do you agree with its assessment? Why or why not? Use the feedback to revise and improve your conclusions.
  5. Compare and Contrast: After writing your conclusions, compare and contrast them. How do the conclusions differ, and why? How does each conclusion reflect the specific thesis statement it’s connected to? Which conclusion do you think is most effective for each outline, and why?

  6. Reflection: Write a short reflection on your experience. How did analyzing the different thesis statements and outlines affect your approach to writing the conclusions? Did you find it challenging to write conclusions that were tailored to each specific thesis? What did you learn about the crucial relationship between the thesis and the conclusion?

Critical Thinking:  The AI’s feedback is not the final word. You should still use your critical thinking skills to evaluate the feedback and make your own decisions about revisions.

Feedback Focus: Focus on the AI’s feedback regarding synthesis and connection to the thesis, as these are the core concepts being addressed in this activity.
