This activity can be completed on the accompanying worksheet. Click “Use Template” in the top right corner to use the worksheet.

This activity will help you refine your skills in using quotes and paraphrases effectively in your academic writing. You’ll practice selecting quotes, crafting accurate paraphrases, and receiving AI-driven feedback to improve your technique.

Instructions:

1. Source Selection and Initial Analysis:

    • Choose an article from the “Works to Choose From” document.
    • Read the article carefully and identify at least three quotes that you might use in your argumentative essay. These quotes should relate to themes or arguments that you find interesting or relevant to your potential topic.
    • Record these quotes in the space below

2. Paraphrasing Practice:

    • For each quote you selected, write a paraphrase in your own words.
    • Remember that paraphrasing involves expressing the author’s ideas using your own language and sentence structure, not just replacing a few words with synonyms.
    • Focus on accurately capturing the meaning of the original quote.

3. AI Feedback on Paraphrasing (Step-by-Step):

    • Use an AI writing tool (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, etc.).
    • For each paraphrase, provide the AI with the original quote and your paraphrase.
    • Ask the AI for feedback on the accuracy and clarity of your paraphrase, using the following prompt as a guide:Example Prompt:”I’m practicing paraphrasing. Here is a quote from one of my sources: [ENTER QUOTE]. Here is my paraphrase: [ENTER PARAPHRASE]. Please provide feedback on how well I have captured the meaning of the quote in my own words. Does my paraphrase accurately reflect the original quote? Is it clear and concise? Are there any areas where I could improve my paraphrase? Please do not offer a revision. Only provide feedback.”
    • Carefully review the feedback provided by the AI. Copy the response given about each paraphrase in the space provided below. Then reflect on the feedback by summarizing the feedback and explaining what you have learned and what you may need to do differently.

    • Consider whether the author’s exact wording is crucial for conveying the meaning or if the idea can be effectively communicated in your own words.
    • Write a brief explanation for each decision, justifying why you chose to use a quote or a paraphrase in that particular instance.
